Know the business before placing an order. Look them up to ensure they have a physical address. You can also talk with a representative and ask that they mail you a catalog.

Do your research. Read other shopper reviews on the vendor. You can do this from sites other than the vendor’s site. Comparison sites such as Epinions post vendor reviews.

Be cautious of a vendor that asks for extra personal information to complete your transaction. You should only provide information that is necessary to process your transaction. Information such as your social security number and bank account number are usually not necessary to complete a transaction.

Make certain the website uses secure technology. At a minimum, the website should have a padlock icon on the bottom right of your browser or its web address should begin with “https.”
